Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Last updated 1 year ago

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

All Canadian citizens, newcomers, and temporary residents who want access to government programs or who want to work in Canada are required to have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) - a unique number that identifies each individual.

After ‘landing,’ you’ll have to visit the nearest Services Canada Office for the SIN Card.

You get the SIN No. immediately as a ‘print-out’ -signed & stamped upon applying, the same day, the same time.

The SIN number would be required for all your further activities in Canada: Job Search, Bank account, House Hunting, etc.

Applying for a SIN

Applying for a SIN is easy to do through Service Canada with the following documentation:

  • Landing Papers or PR Card

  • Passport

Additional documents that may be required depending on individual circumstances include:

  • Work permit or study permit (if applicable)

  • Birth certificate (if born outside of Canada)

  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)

  • Canadian visa (if applicable)

  • Any other relevant immigration or identification documents

Having these documents ready beforehand can help streamline the application process for obtaining a SIN. It's essential to check with Service Canada or the official SIN application website for any specific requirements based on your immigration status or situation.
